Global Heat Reduction Registry
Introducing Heat Reduction Credits – credits aimed directly at reducing drivers of excess planetary heat in the short term
The Global Heat Reduction Registry supports projects that directly help lower the drivers of global warming, starting now. Through the Registry’s high-integrity Heat Reduction Credits, organizations can help finance projects that target not only CO₂ and other long-lived greenhouse gases, but also tackle climate super pollutants in the crucial next 10-20 years.
For the first time, businesses, governments, and other investors can make verified claims not only about their CO₂-equivalent footprint reduction, but also the degree to which these credits are helping to draw down atmospheric heat. With this additional knowledge, organizations can make more strategic choices about which projects to support and credits to buy.
An Innovative Approach to Drawing Down Heat
-
Global warming impact over any time period
Conventional carbon accounting measures the atmospheric impact of greenhouse gas emissions over a 100-year period. But we don’t have 100 years. Our Registry allows project proponents and buyers to get independently verified credit for the atmospheric heat reduction impact of their investments over timeframes that matter right now, such as the next 10, 20, or 30 years. -
Heat Reduction Credits account for all drivers of warming, over any timeframe
Our credits allow market participants to focus on any and all drivers of global warming. This includes: CO₂ and other long-lived greenhouse gases (GHGs); powerful climate super pollutants like methane, black carbon, tropospheric ozone, and hydrofluorocarbons; and surface conditions like loss of albedo (Earth’s reflectivity). This expanded scope, combined with the ability to calculate the value of credits over any timeframe, is what we call “CO₂e +”. -
Quantified co-benefits and trade-offs
Rather than relying on project self-reporting, our Registry recognizes the achievements documented under international sustainability certification schemes, and offers project proponents the option of obtaining quantified, independently verified assessments of environmental, health, and/or societal co-benefits and trade-offs. This gives project proponents high quality data to support their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and increases buyer and stakeholder confidence in the claims that accompany Heat Reduction Credits.
